Alas, no [community profile] rec_cember entry today, buuuut...

I know tons of you are deep in the Heated Rivalry hole. Did you know a kinkmeme was happening? And a SECOND kinkmeme? Now you do!

GQ has an article out with some rather saucy images.

I've spotted some icons by [personal profile] wickedgame here.

Lastly, I'd recommend using the Explore/Site and Journal Search feature; I haven't seen DW be this vocal about a show for ages. I'm sure you'll find fellow fans to chat with.

Go forth and be fannish 🥳

Talking about some of the songs I'd like to filk.

Mega Man X, using “Kryptonite” by 3 Doors Down. I'll admit that I didn't come up with this idea on my own- The picture caption on TVTropes for the Mega Man X page read "If I go Maverick, will you still call me Mega Man", and I began to want to do the entire song.

Sly Cooper, using “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” from the Lion King.I thought it might be amusing to have Bentley and Murray playing the roles of Timon and Pumbaa respectively as they lament the loss of Sly to his falling in love with Carmelita.

Samurai Jack, using “What’s This?” from The Nightmare Before Christmas. More specifically inspired by the tone change created by Flyleaf's cover, I thought this could be interesting.

Tortall, using “Joan” by Heather Dale. I've been thinking about adapting this for Alanna for some time. I'm sure anything I come up with can't be worse than someone vidding the song with Azula from Nickelodeon's Avatar Universe.

Wander over Yonder, using “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023). This one would be for fun, Lord Hater about his crush on Dominator.

So, I've been thinking about some of my favorite fairy tales lately.

I'm not sure if I want to mention them on social media though- I want Disney to keep their greedy, grubby corporate mitts off of them! Sigh... I suppose it may not matter- I caught wind that they were considering an adaptation of "The Nightingale" at one point. That's my favorite Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, so...bullet dodged, maybe?

Anyway... Maybe I'll just head over to SurLaLune for a bit and read to my heart's content.

A random assortment of favorite fairy tale retellings.

  1. Cloaked in Red, by Vivian Vande Velde. (Little Red Riding Hood) So this is a collection of short stories that Vande Velde wrote to address things that don't quite make sense with the fairy tale from a modern perspective.

  2. Hoodwinked! (animated film, 2005) (Little Red Riding Hood) This film has an interesting spin on the fairy tale by retelling it from several perspectives.

  3. Beauty and the Beast (animated film, 1991) I'll admit it, this is one of my favorite Disney movies, even if there are some things I would have done differently.

  4. The Little Mermaid (Toei anime, 1975) I liked seeing an adaptation of this fairy tale that cleaved closer to Andersen's intent.

  5. The Rumpelstiltskin Problem, by Vivian Vande Velde (do I need to say it) Another of Vande Velde's short story collections addressing oddities in the tale.

  6. Sleeping Beauty (animated film, 1959) Another favorite from Disney. I WILL defend Aurora.

  7. Beauty, by Robin McKinley. (Beauty and the Beast) One of my favorite novel retellings of the tale. Also, I WANT THAT LIBRARY!

I'm going to make up some of my own video game questions to answer. Feel free to answer some of these yourself if you are a gamer and so wish to.

  1. What's your favorite game based on an existing media property?

  2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time, SNES port. (I went and bought the Cowabunga Collection so I could play it again.)

  3. What's your most anticipated sequel to a video game that you have played/want to play?

  4. I was SO HAPPY when Psychonauts 2 was finally released! I'm still working my way through it, but it's fun! Game sequels I'm looking forward to include Coffee Talk Tokyo and the as-of-yet untitled Okami sequel.

  5. Has a video game ever scared you enough to stop playing it?

  6. I didn't even start playing the PS1 video games based on the Alien movies, just watching my dad play freaked me out so much! Yet I'm thinking about playing Alien: Isolation. Maybe now that I'm an adult I won't get as scared...

  7. Have you ever bought a video game secondhand?

  8. Yes, even though it has meant I haven't been able to finish a game or two.

  9. Do you prefer cooperative or player vs. player gameplay?

  10. I prefer co-op. Much more fun for the most part.>

  11. Have you ever wrangled a game to be playable with more than one person, even though it was meant for single-player?

  12. Yes, the original ChexQuest. When I was a kid, I'd play it with my dad. He would move the character around, and I would shoot the monsters and open doors.

  13. What game could you replay over and over and not get sick of?

  14. I spent a lot of time replaying the first Psychonauts game and the second and third Sly Cooper games as a teen.

  15. What game have you played the most or the longest?

  16. Probably Twisted Metal 2.

  17. What game do you most want to be remastered?

  18. A bunch of Twisted Metal games! 2 and Black the most.

  19. Are there any game elements in a given series that you think should be left behind?

  20. I feel that Nintendo should ditch the stuff from the Breath of the Wild timeline for The Legend of Zelda series going forward.

Dragon Age: Awakening

I just recently finished Awakening, and I don't really have much thoughts beyond: "Well, the Architect gives the world some interesting wrinkles." Like, the implications of the fact Darkspawn can be de-leashed from the "dig dig dig" compulsion is incredibly interesting. I just...kind of wish it had a bit more to it beyond what the DLC gave me and the suggestion of siding with him before the Mother fight.

The companions were a delight! I still love how greasy Oghren is. Anders was a hoot. Sigrun needed more screen time. Velanna was also a lot of fun (I love prickly characters like her). Nathaniel was pretty neat. Justice is fine.

The Vigil's Keep side characters were also friggin' great. Mr. Bombadier and Wade the Smith were highlights, that's for sure.

The general DLC combat upgrades are nice touches to the base game. I didn't struggle as much with stamina management in Origins, but boy were those stamina droughts coming in clutch during the final boss. The way magic is used for melee weapons was...a choice, I guess. I know I'll miss that flexibility as I continue on with DA2 and DAI, but still. My mage Warden couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with the default sword the DLC insists on giving to the mage Wardens.

I'll be playing through the rest of the DLC campaigns before moving on to DA2. I've tackled Witch Hunt and started Leliana's Song and Darkspawn Chronicles. The last one is so friggin funny in concept.

+ Had an extended family dinner today and got to listen to my lovely aunt and cousin talk about how great ChatGPT is, how she's using it to plan a girl's trip to Italy, and how helpful it'll be for writing the speeches at my grandmother's funeral. Fucking shoot me into outer space strapped to a rocket.

+ Got to see the latest Avatar movie at the cinemas. My least favorite of the three, lacking the genuine awe and beauty of the world. What they did try just felt forced, and one character in particular should have been left to die in the second movie ugh.

+ Big plus for the cozy and hazily lit curtain fic promo trailer thingy they did before the movie. IYKYK. Kinda made me wish I had an ear to the ground in that fandom still.

+ I think I've successfully broken through my iconning block!! Shout out to dysfunctional vampires and dysfunctional lesbians.

+ BIG psa: Apple shifted Pluribus to air on the 24th, two days earlier than usual. I'll have to get up extra early to see it before 2 Nøtter Til Askepott, because if not I'll be thinking about it and wanting to all day lol. It's been such a good series for me to watch? There's this whole thing where there's two wolves inside of me, one appreciating the thought and care put into every decision, and how slow it's allowed to move, the second wanting to pick into every detail and tear through it. Both enjoyable in different ways!

I have watched every episode a minimum of twice. It may be my new comfort watch show?¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

Rec-cember Day 21

Killing Eve
baby, be gentle (it's my first time) by [archiveofourown.org profile] seabisquit (15,923 words). Eve being perfectly Eve, Vilanelle being perfectly Vilanelle, and the two of them being defenseless in the face of that.
So this is it. She’s going to kill Villanelle, and this is how it happens. To hell and fuck with everything that had happened. Their sort of half-truce in Scotland. Their agreement to not let things be boring. She is going to take that pretty, slender throat between her hands and squeeze her like a rubber chicken. “You are absolutely the stupidest, most selfish, most infuriating person I have ever met.”

“Oh, you flirt.” Villanelle smirks. She takes a few steps forward, hands on her hips.

“I’m going to—”
Kill you, her brain completes. The words won’t come out of her mouth, stopgapped by rage, leaving Villanelle a wide opening to slip through.

“You’re going to what, Eve?” She sighs in a derisive voice, sticking out her bottom lip in a mockery of a pout. “Spank me? Have I really been that bad?”

The word
spank grinds everything to a halt within Eve. It hits a switch in her, killing the rising steam in her stomach. Of course she can’t kill Villanelle. That would be silly and short-sighted. But spank her?

It could be just as effective and tremendously less permanent.

“Yes.” Eve says with bland finality. And oh, the way that word wipes the condescending smirk off Villanelle’s face and replaces it with surprise. To accentuate her point, Eve drops behind her onto the bed, sitting on the edge with her hands on her knees.

This makes for two fic recs featuring the holidays and two featuring spanking so far. Taking bets on which is gonna take the win *g*

Here's what I wrote for [community profile] ficinabox this year!

I created 5 things, including for my original assignment, a swap, and a pinch hit. This year I wrote a fic remix and tried creating some new-to-me in-universe document mediums, such as movie reviews and a list of things character is not allowed to do, all of which were fun!

Being a Thorough and Complete Liste of Things That Binky is NOT Permitted To Do (AO3 | DW)
Death & Binky, Death & Binky & Albert | 1309 words | rated G | no archive warnings apply
Tags: List of things (character) is not allowed to do, Fluff, Humor, Slice of Life
A curling scroll of paper, prominently tacked up in Binky's stall, is covered with edicts written in two very different hands.

Terms and Conditions (The Lust Blinded Remix) (AO3 | DW)
The Falcon & the Winter Soldier
Sam/Bucky | 5255 words | rated E | no archive warnings apply
Tags: Remix, Sex Pollen, Aftermath of sex pollen, Mutual Pining, Guilt, Lack of Communication, Clubbing, Soft Dom Sam, Rimming, Oral Sex, Anal Sex, Honor Bondage, Getting Together
Temporary suspension of cognitive faculties. Impaired decision-making. Heightened electrochemical response to sexual stimuli. Decreased sense of inhibition. Shortened refractory period. Excessive sperm production. Lack of impulse control.

The facts were laid out in stark black and white on the mission report. Bucky couldn’t decide if it was worse to have experienced it in the field, or to have to read through this euphemistic fucking jargon.

---

After a run-in with sex pollen while out on a mission together, Sam and Bucky are forced to deal with the aftermath.

A Night to Remember [Logic Puzzle] (AO3 | DW)
Roswell New Mexico
Max/Liz/Kyle | 408 words + logic puzzle | rated T | no archive warnings apply
Tags: Logic Grid Puzzle, Logic puzzle, Alcohol, Morning after a wedding hookup, other people's weddings, Getting Together
Waking up in a hotel room the morning after attending a wedding, Max, Liz, and Kyle need help reassembling their fuzzy memories of the night before. A logic grid puzzle.

Honor the Roll (AO3 | DW)

Eddie flopped dramatically halfway out of the bed to fish out the lube from the disaster piles of laundry and random stuff he'd left on his floor. "I have a system," he'd airily told Steve once, after Steve'd accidentally kicked over a jar of small change, guitar picks, and thumb tacks that'd been lurking under a pair of boxers. Steve wasn't a neat freak or anything, but he didn't leave landmines hidden under his dirty laundry either.

Hanging off the bed gave Steve a perfect view of his ass, though, which was why he was distracted when Eddie said, "Oh, hey, nat twenty!"
