DC Comics, Diana, SFW (but a bit suggestive)
Really vibrant, colourful style! A pin-up style pose, fabulously flirty.

Andor (TV), Kleya Marki/Vel Sartha, rated M
This is outstanding, and pulls no punches! Excellent dialogue and characterization, and smolderingly hot but spiky chemistry between them.

the Fairy and the Human [art + card game reskin + plushie pattern]
Original Work, Fairy Queen/Young Woman Who Unwittingly Entered Her Realm, rated G
Gorgeous! This link goes to the first chapter which is stunning art of the queen and the young woman, with really lovely composition and beautiful colours and textures. But the creator has also created an entire reskinned board game with fairyland creatures, a cute sticker set, and even a small plushie pattern. I'm overwhelmed by the creativity, so cool!

Villette by Charlotte Bronte. The level of emotional repression in this!! I love it. Last page made me scream at Charlotte Bronte's ghost. I do wish I'd kept Google translate at my side as I read it. There was a good amount of French dialogue that I only absorbed contextually.

And in TV, I watched My Adventures with Superman (season 2) which continues to be very fun and cute.

How is it only 1 week til Christmas?! I am not prepared.

Since switching over from Windows to Linux, I've had to leave behind the accessibility of buying digital music on itunes. Recently, I've decided to dig a bit deeper into bandcamp and local music stores (I know several musicheads who told me the usual haunts), and I've discovered a few of the biggish bands I follow are on bandcamp!

Oceans of Slumber and Bloodywood were the ones I looked up on a whim since I had recommended them to a friend. I'm so happy I can find them there if the local CD stores don't carry their CDs.

I've also found a few new artists that hit all the highs of symphonic metal like Ad Infinitum and Xanthochroid

Edit: WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE CLAIR OBSCUR SOUNDTRACK IS ON BANDCAMP

Fallout is baaaack!

I love this show.

Lucy is such a great character and I love her relationship with the Ghoul. The distrust, the disgust, the way they challenge each other. And them working together for now is so great to watch because it didn't make anything easier for them.

And Norm! Oh, I love Norm. I love how this meek guy grows braver and braver because he is under so much pressure that he can't be meek anymore.

Random thing I thought about while watching this ep: Being woken up as one of Bud's Buddies and suddenly having to face actual Vault life – a Vault life that has its own history now – must be so fucking strange. They were frozen either shortly before or after the attacks and have no clue about what has happened since then, they do not know this society and have to insert themselves into it.

Random ramblings about 2x01 under the cut. )

2025 in review | a year of writing

[personal profile] xwyndx
Hello! I saw this questions on [community profile] ficwip and thought "why not", so here are my answers. Most of the fics I talk about are published under TeamRocket9 on Ao3.

Including WIPs, how many fics have you worked on since January 1st? Original fiction counts too!
11, not including short drabbles or ficlets that I wrote for different DW events

How many did you post for other people to read?
9, the other two are still WIPs

What's something NEW that you tried in a fic?
Well this year I wrote one of my most personal fics, it was about exploring my aroace identity and it was also a fic of a fic. I knew barely anyone would care about that one but writing it was terapeutic.

What piece of media inspired you the most?
Daredevil

How many fandoms did you write for?
7 including OW as one of them

What ship(s) captured your heart?
Team Red! Not as a romantic ship, but as a chaotic friendship / found family
As a romantic ship Kate Bishop/Yelena Belova
Also one I still haven't written for: Gelphie

What character(s) captured your heart?
The same ones from the previous answer plus Clint Barton, Karen Page, Foggy Nelson, Claire Temple and others I still haven't written: Jessica Jones and Colleen Wing

Did you write for any new fandoms or ships?
I'm going through The Defenders and related shows this year so yes, I've been writting Daredevil and want to write more of the Defenders characters in the future.

What fic meant the most to you to write?
I kind of already answered but the one about the aroace mc (it's titled The Bowling Bear: Daredevil Edition)

What fic made you feel the happiest to work on?
It's between "Who's Peter? I Don't Know Him" and "Tomorrow". Both have lots of fun, fluffy, comical and action elements that made my brain just tingle happily.

What fic was the most satisfying to finish?
I guess "Shine a Light" because it was very difficult for me to get through since it was a gift and not at all my style.

What fic was the most challenging to work on?
Same answer.

What's the most interesting topic you researched for a fic?
I don't research ngl, I just write silly fluffiness and action that is not physically posible and keep going with my day.

What were your shortest and longest fics?
My shortest published fic (on Ao3) was a ficlet I wrote for a comm on DW. The title is "The Devil's Birthday" and it's, predictably, about Matt Murdock's birthday. It's just a silly scene.
My longest is The Bowling Bear: Daredevil Edition, with 12k words. I haven't written longer stuff this year, thankfully, because I don't have the time lol.

What was on your writing playlist?
I always write with LoFi music or some kind of videogame chill OSTs, you know, the ones titled "music to study and relax to" on Youtube.

Where did you write? Was there a favorite spot?
My desk? Idk

What’s your favorite title of the year?
One of my pwp works so I'm not saying :P

Share your favorite opening line
"The villain started laughing maniacally, and Kate had to suppress the desire to roll her eyes and huff."

Share your favorite ending line
“And then everyone died. No, no, wait, then we went flying in a magical rainbow unicorn and got married in fairyland. Yup, I like that one. The end.”

Share your favorite piece of dialogue
I don't remember all of them???? But here's one I guess, kinda cliché but

“I know, you should clone yourself!”
“That’s a brilliant idea!”
“I was clearly mocking you,” she said, exhasperated. “You know what you should do? You should step in front of him, take you mask off, take his mask off, and then stuff your tongue in his m—”
“Oh, shoot, the call is crashing,” Peter interrupted her.
“No, it’s not!”

Share the funniest line(s) you wrote this year
Again, I don't remember all of them, but here are some lines I guess

"how could she get mad at him when he was so amazingly supportive yet unbelievably useless?"

“I made us in the Sims,” Jenna was running out of arguments. “We are married and have three cats.”
“I’m more of a dog person,” Ashley smiled. “I hope that’s not a deal breaker.”

“Of course, what if I’m bleeding and nearby and I have to come here to change?”
Matt sighed, remembering the five times that had happened. Peter also sighed on Matt’s behalf, which made the lawyer feel grateful. Maybe it would be a ‘no’ on killing Peter. He was still considering Wade.

Did you get frustrated with a fic at some point? What happened and how did you get past it?
Yes, I felt frustrated with the angsty one I had to write for an exchange. I don't know how I got past it, by the sheer power of having a deadline I guess.

If you had to choose one, what was THE most satisfying writing moment of your year?
It would be those times were an idea just stroke me and I just HAD to write it, I love when that happens. This year it barely happened to me, I wasn't that obsessed to be constantly thinking new ideas, also I had to study a lot so I treasure the moments were it happened.

Did you do anything special to celebrate finishing something?
I don't think I did

Did you create fanworks other than fic? Show one off!
I'm trying to draw something! But it's still a wip. Also I have no idea what I'm doing.
I've also made some graphics for a comm here on DW it's been really fun! For instance:

How many fannish events did you take part in? Things like bangs, exchanges, ship weeks, zines, prompt memes, etc. They all count!
I've been taking part on [community profile] seasons_of_fandom and it's super fun, it's like going back in time!
I've also taken part on the Femslash kink exchange, Daredevil & Defenders exchange, Enemies to lovers exchange and now I'm taking part in another exchange; I'd never participated in exchanges before this year and it's a blast.
I've also tried some bingos like the comment bingo or the july break bingo, but I didn't complete them.
I'm now participating in [community profile] 10trueloves but I didn't have time yet to post there.

Think back on everything you've worked on since January and give yourself a compliment. A real one! Be nice to yourself.
Look at all you wrote and took part in, stop thinking you don't do enough!

If this were an awards show, who would you thank?
Thanks to my best friends always because they have to hear me talk about all the silly things I write and all the random events I take part in and they don't get it but they are happy for me.

What’s left on your to-do list for 2025?
Fill a couple of prompts from 10trueloves and finish the wips for the exchange I'm currently in.

What would you like to write next year?
I would like to just finish the stuff I have started but not finished honestly, and then I'll problably take a break from fics and go back to my novel!

I heard the Life series is going on indefinite hiatus? That’s wild. But honestly, they all deserve a break after all that, lol.

Rec-cember Day 17

Gilmore Girls
They Go Just as Quickly as They Come by [archiveofourown.org profile] petpluto (2,004 words). Richard dies. Emily goes on living.
At first, its emptiness wasn’t as pervasive. She accepted the house, and the stillness.

It hadn’t been so long. Not really. Richard had spent longer away on business trips. The house was empty, but not unfamiliarly so. But there came a time when, if Richard had been away on a business trip, he would have been back from it. And the emptiness pressed in until it is all she can see, all she can feel.

The house is empty.

She doesn’t wander the halls. She doesn’t throw herself at his portrait. She does not have a portrait made. She doesn’t shutter the windows and regress. She doesn’t dress in all black. She isn’t part of some maudlin tale, some piece of fiction Rory and Richard had once fawned over together. She is a graduate of Smith, after all. She still belongs to any number of groups, of charities and clubs and associations. She fills her days, just as she did before.

The house, though, is still empty, when she returns to it.

Kat Watches Things

The Dune: Part One - Rewatch. Hopefully I'll get to the second part one day. Anyway. Still extremely watchable. Still fills me with yearning for a Paul Atreides/Duncan Idaho fic with a very specific dynamic that I haven't really found yet in the existing fics.

The Art Detectives, Series 1 - DI Palmer works for Heritage Crime, tries to woo a museum curator and has an art forger for a father. He recruits a DC Malik to help him crack all manner of heritage related crimes. Which, because this is fiction, includes not a single case of metal theft from church roofs which is what keeps the real heritage crime unit busy. Also, they would never investigate murders no matter how many old paintings were involved in the plot. Anyway, reality aside, this was perfect comfort watching, not particularly emotionally taxing. I liked the episode in Belfast best, about Titanic memorabilia, probably because I've been there to the Titanic museum and it was nice to see the vibes.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Series 1-3 - ITV only had the first series but I abused H's Amazon account to get the next two. And enjoyed this a whole lot! And also, now I need to see Disco again. Anyway, post the events of that shit storm, Captain Pike, Spock and Number One carry on seeking new life and new civilisations. this got spoilery )

Kat Reads Books

Borne by Jeff VanderMeer - One of the reviews for the book called it 'brilliant and deeply strange' and I would sign that whole heartedly. It's difficult to describe the story. Is it a novel about dystopian future where environmental disaster, rampant biotechnology and unchecked capitalism have resulted in a collapse of all world order? Yes. Is it a tale of urban sci-fantasy with monsters and maybe-alien, maybe-other dimensional being. Also yes. Is this a deeply human story about what it actually means to be a person even if you're not human, and the fluidity of memory and identity and finding meaning in making connections despite it all? Definitely that. Is it body-horror about the unspeakable, visceral cost of survival in an environment where everything and everyone can and will hurt you, consume you, kill you for food, for salvage, for territory, for mindless aggression, or because that's what they were designed to do? Fuck yes. But also, it's a story about a woman who finds a strange creature and brings them home, raises them up, or tries to; a woman who remembers a different world but fights for her current one, her home, her lover, her survival. If you like strange, world building that does very little explaining and expects the reader to cope with that, dystopian struggle for survival and, somehow, a hopeful ending despite everything, this is a book for you.

Skein Island by Aliya Whiteley - Marianne receives an invite to Skein Island, a women-only retreat where her mother went many years ago and then never returned home afterwards. Once there, it's quickly apparent that the island guards a deadly secret, kept placid with the stories the women share. The book winds Greek mythology and archetypes, gender roles and relationships, and the power of stories, especially the small, mundane ones. This is an interesting story but also pretty caught up in gender essentialism given its core premise. There's a later short-story at the end that has a blink and you miss it hint about the protagonist being trans, so I got the impression the author themselves started thinking about the premise beyond the binary.

Back on my questionnnaire bs... This time video games, questions list 1.

  1. Do you like video games? Why or why not?

  2. I do like video games! They can be fun and a nice distraction

  3. Do you play video games these days? How much time per week do you spend playing them?

  4. I do play video games these days. Entirely too much time per week.

  5. Some people say that video games are a waste of time. Do you agree or disagree?

  6. I would agree to an extent- It depends on what you are playing. If it's all games that don't have you interacting with people, then it's a bit of a problem.

  7. What was the first game you ever played? Where and when did you play it?

  8. I don't remember the very first game I ever played as a kid. Probably an edutainment game on the PC.

  9. What is your favorite all-time game? Why was it great?

  10. I don't really choose favorites.

  11. What type of games are good for playing alone? Which are good for playing with other people?

  12. Depends on how the game is built, but overall, single player for a lone, multiplayer with other people.

  13. How much money do you spend on video games? Is it more or less than you spend on other forms of entertainment?

  14. I don't want to count that...I spend more on games than I do on other things, because I can usually find my other preferred forms of entertainment through the library!

  15. People play games on computers, phones, consoles and in arcades. On what kind of machine or device do you prefer to play a game?

  16. Handheld consoles, mostly. I love my Switch and Steam Deck, and will also play on my PC.

  17. Have you ever played a video game in an arcade? Are arcades popular in your country?

  18. Closest thing I've come to an arcade would be Chuck E. Cheese, Major Magic, Discovery Zone, and the like. I don't know of too many surviving arcades in the USA.

The theme for this rec-cember post is Catelyn Tully Stark.

I’ve been reading a lot of ASOIAF fic recently, and I was trying to figure out how to organize some recs. Cat is one of my favorite characters, so I decided to rec some Catelyn-centric fics. Not all of them are from her POV, but in all of them she plays a major role and/or it explores some interesting aspect of her character/relationships/journey.

“Who did you promise?” she asks him, tearful with alarm and terror.
He gives an odd sort of little half smile, then rasps, “Lyanna. I always kept my promises. She would have been so angry with me… otherwise. I had to help her. It was the only way.”
“What was the only way?” Catelyn feels cold sweat dripping down her back, feels slightly feverish herself. “What do you mean, Ned? Did Lyanna ask you to do something?”
“Keep him away… from Robert,” he whispers. “To protect him.”
(Mortally wounded during the Greyjoy Rebellion, a delirious Ned makes a deathbed confession to Catelyn, leaving her to pick up the pieces of both her life and Jon Snow's.)

That one AU where Jon goes to war with Robb, and finds out he has more in common with Lady Catelyn than they both expected. Featuring brotherly bonding, Stark family moments, and characters not getting killed off.

Catelyn/Jaime:
We Stole Our New Lives Through Blood and Pain by vixleanord
https://archiveofourown.org/works/399800
His father gives Jaime a choice: pick a queen or one will be picked for him. Jaime says the first name which comes to mind, and, just like that, Catelyn Tully becomes his wife.

Family, Duty, Honor by angel_deux
https://archiveofourown.org/works/21111497/chapters/50235896
Jaime Lannister's betrothal to Lysa Tully ends, and so does Catelyn Tully's betrothal to Brandon Stark. Tywin Lannister still wants his alliance, so Jaime and Catelyn are married.
They're both relieved to find that they get along, and their marriage may in time be a successful one, as long as Jaime manages to keep the secret of his affair with his sister.

Round the Riverbend by emmaliza
https://archiveofourown.org/works/15326322
Jaime is lost on the way to his chambers in Riverrun, but finds his hostess offering to show him the way more interesting.

Kermit Tully, known to all but his lord father as Ser Kit, sits besides his flushed, giddy sister, talking and laughing with the other lordlings around him. He sits straight and tall, and his coppery hair gleams in the torchlight. Eddara is struck by his high cheekbones and the smile on his face; he appears genuinely intrigued by everything said to him. More than anything, for an instant, she wants a boy like Kit Tully to look at her like that.
(Edda Stark meets Kit Tully at Harrenhal, and for an instant, life is like the sweet, sad songs her sister loves.)

AU. The Tyrells succeed in stealing Sansa Stark from King's Landing. This is focused on Sansa, but her relationship with Catelyn (and both Catelyn and Sansa with Arya) gets some nice focus

I've decided that in order to organize my life a little more and keep on top of things, it may be a good idea for me to start leaning on a strange combination of planners/organizer. On-and-off during work, I've been looking up modular notebooks specific for those who do a lot of traveling. I've come across several DIY tutorials to make a Midori-style traveler's notebook, but most of those use leather. As I'm a seamster and have excess fabric, I'll be using that instead.

I'll be using this blog tutorial. I kinda want to go two-steps up and try some decorative embroidery, but we'll see how I'm feeling lol

Scott Pilgrim
Afternoon Delights by [archiveofourown.org profile] wakeupnew (1,033 words). A good Wallace and Scott interaction never fails to cheer me up.
There is a bang.

The door, he realizes fuzzily. Possibly -- hitting something?? Definitely opening really loudly. He really wishes it wasn't doing that. He should probably start locking it while he's sleeping.

"I thought your shit had supposedly been gotten together, guy," says someone, who flings himself down on the sofa that Scott uses for a bed, hard enough that the cushions bounce under both of them. "What are you doing asleep at 3:00 on a sunny Saturday afternoon?"

"Frrrrsleeping," Scott groans indignantly, and then Wallace plucks the pillow off his head and out of his arms. Scott tries to grab it back without opening his eyes, and his hands mostly just flail ineffectually against Wallace's jeans.

"Whoa there, tiger," Wallace drawls. "I have a boyfriend now; let's keep it PG." He drops the pillow on Scott's chest. If it's possible to drop a pillow with force, Wallace does it. "You know, considering that you're the all-time evil-ex-fighting champion
and the best fighter in the greater Toronto metropolitan area, it was very easy to pull that away from you."

What a weekend. My laptop died immediately before the cold hit, so it was in the shop all weekend while I couldn't go anywhere, and then my car battery followed and I got stuck at home for an extra day.

On the bright side, I made a dent in my reading list and my cats were very happy. I hope my Christmas tree survives their first day unsupervised. (They're 100% fine together - Mirage has adjusted very nicely to having a second cat in the house and Springs has warmed right up - but they do like to chase each other across the furniture.)

Three days until vacation. Work needs to stay nice and slow, and the vet visit (to introduce Springs to my existing vet) needs to go well, and then I can crash.

Back to the book questions!

  1. What deceased author would you have liked to meet?

  2. Terry Pratchett.

  3. Think about your favorite genre. To you, which author is the master of that genre?

  4. That's not something I've put much thought into.

  5. Do you judge a book by its cover? Would a shoddy cover put you off?

  6. Define "shoddy". I try not to judge by cover.

  7. Do certain tropes attract you? For example, orphans, love triangles, anti-heroes?

  8. I haven't thought about that, though there are certainly tropes that repulse me.

  9. Are there any books you haven't been able to finish? Why not?

  10. Hmm. Some books I just got bored with, some I get so irritated with themes/implications that I just stop reading.

  11. What are some of your favorite quotes or scenes from a book?

  12. One favorite quote: "When people say a knight's job is all glory, I laugh, and laugh, and laugh," he said. Often I can stop laughing before they edge away and talk about soothing drinks." -Raoul of Goldenlake and Malories' Peak, from Squire by Tamora Pierce

  13. Did you read books in school? Can you remember which ones?

  14. Assigned or for fun? I do remember a few assignments, like Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night Dream.

  15. Are there any books you could read over and over again and never get bored of?

  16. I haven't gotten bored of Megan Whalen Turner's novel The Thief yet!
